Add Biodegradable Materials to Your Portfolio with Biosuccinium®

Applications in Food Serviceware

Collecting, cleaning and reusing serviceware is not always a viable option. Compostable plates, cups and cutlery are attractive alternatives which can be disposed and composted together with food residues and other organic waste streams. This helps to keep waste out of landfill and can reduce disposal cost.

Polybutylene succinate (PBS) is a biodegradable material which can be derived from Biosuccinium®. PBS compounds offer various benefits for food catering, such as heat resistance and well-balanced mechanical properties.

Injection moulded products, such as cutlery, benefit from the high crystallinity of PBS which allows for efficient high-volume production of heat resistant products.

Beverage Cups

Typically, paper coffee cups are coated with a polyethylene (PE) film which can make them difficult to recycle. Coating cups with PBS may be a solution to this, as they can be recycled or re-pulped and in addition, could be disposed through composting.

Coffee Capsules

Single-serve coffee capsules represent a fast growing market. The high fraction of water and coffee grounds make them difficult to incinerate or recycle. Capsules based on PBS combine compostability with the required heat resistance.
