1,4 Butanediol (1,4 BDO)

World production of 1,4-butanediol is large, about one million metric tons per year, with almost half used to produce tetrahydrofuran (THF) to make elastane fibers such as Spandex.

1,4 BDO can also be used to produce polybutylene terephtalate (PBT) which is used in applications such as electrical and electronics equipment and the automotive market for products like wheel covers, gearshift knobs and connectors.

1,4 BDO, as described in the polyurethane section, is also used to make Polybutylene succinate and polyester polyols for polyurethanes.

Biosuccinium™ offers the opportunity to produce bio-based, renewable 1,4 BDO that reduces the dependence on oil-based resources.
